Since 1972

Ian McCully was born in Oamaru, raised in Duntroon and finished school at Nelson College. He served a five-year apprenticeship at H. Baigent Ltd, worked on Southpine's sawmill on Quarantine Road, then gained more experience in Canberra before coming home to Nelson with his wife, Carole, to start his own building business.

He kept up with the trade by attending international expos and bringing new techniques back to the yard. He made sure the company trained apprentices. His motto was "Another day, another challenge."

  1. 1972

    Ian McCully founds Ian McCully Builders in Nelson.

  2. 1992

    An aluminium window manufacturing division joins the building business.

  3. 1994

    Brian Mazure joins. Over the years he helps grow the team from six to 80.

  4. 1995

    IMB Construction Ltd takes on commercial, educational and industrial contracts.

  5. Today

    Over 35 full-time carpenters and apprentices, seven foremen, a dedicated equipment and deliveries person, and contract labour and subcontractors when a job needs them.

How every job runs

Plan Do Act

Every job is talked through with the project manager, quantity surveyor and site foreman before work starts, tracked in documented site meetings, and signed off against a maintenance checklist.
