IMB Construction has been a cornerstone of Nelson's construction industry for over five decades.

Today, IMB Construction continues Ian's legacy of excellence, evolving with the industry while upholding its reputation for craftsmanship and integrity. His motto, "Another day, another challenge," reflects the company's enduring spirit: built on hard work, innovation, and a passion for shaping the future.

Since 1995, we have consistently achieved success across commercial, educational, and industrial sectors. Our expertise also extends to high-quality design and craftsmanship, where we collaborate closely with clients to bring their visions to life. In addition, our dedicated maintenance team offers comprehensive support for both residential and commercial contracts.

Since 1972

Ian McCully was born in Oamaru, raised in Duntroon and finished school at Nelson College. He served a five-year apprenticeship at H. Baigent Ltd, worked on Southpine's sawmill on Quarantine Road, then gained more experience in Canberra before coming home to Nelson with his wife, Carole, to start his own building business.

He kept up with the trade by attending international expos and bringing new techniques back to the yard. He made sure the company trained apprentices. His motto was "Another day, another challenge."

1972
Ian McCully founds Ian McCully Builders in Nelson.
1992
An aluminium window manufacturing division joins the building business.
1994
Brian Mazure joins. Over the years he helps grow the team from six to 80.
1995
IMB Construction Ltd takes on commercial, educational and industrial contracts.
Today
Over 35 full-time carpenters and apprentices, seven foremen, a dedicated equipment and deliveries person, and contract labour and subcontractors when a job needs them.

Richard Cole
Project Manager

Runs every part of project and commercial management, from concept and design coordination to procurement, contract negotiation and contract management. Friendly and accommodating, he likes working with project teams to meet high standards. He has managed all IMB hospital works for the past 15 years.
40+years in the NZ building industry

Brian Mazure
Registered Quantity Surveyor and Project Manager (NZIQS Associate)

Specialises in tendering and project management across domestic, industrial, medical and educational work. He has built lasting relationships with Nelson College for Girls, Tasman District Council and Cawthron Institute. Before joining Ian McCully Builders in 1994 he spent nine years at B.R. Malcolm Ltd, on jobs like Nelson Fire Station and Oakwoods Retirement Village.
35+years in construction

Achim Brinkmann
Senior Quantity Surveyor

Keeps costs under control from tender to final account, always aiming for the best commercial outcome. A strong communicator who builds good relationships with clients and subcontractors, and often the glue between the commercial and delivery teams.
